Second Sunday Lent 2026
The story of the Transfiguration as we hear this weekend in the gospel is all too familiar to most of us. We've heard it over and over our lifetime. The figures of Moses and Elijah represent Israel's history of being guided by the law and the prophets. That shouldn't be any surprise to anyone. Jesus is not negating the law and the prophets but shows himself to be their fulfillment. Well, the Transfiguration isn't the big news of the weekend.
On Saturday, February 28, 2026, our great country went to war. Mind you that this is not a large scale world war - yet. However, this is just the next step in taking our country further and further from her guiding principles.
The State of the Union address this past week gave every hint this was coming. It shouldn't come as a shock to anyone that the US, along with Israel, made air strikes in broad daylight in Iran thanks to controversially true claims that Iran was simply becoming a threat to the US. The President brought it up in the State of the Union. There is nowhere in the Constitution, nor international law that says if you feel threatened by another country, make a pre-emptive strike to show them who is the boss/big gun. And while the Ayatollah who was killed in the attack might have been a very evil man, he probably pales in comparison to some other government leaders around the world -- including our own. I saw one celebrity who tried to use one "positive result" of the attack as to why it was a good thing to do - allowing Irani women the chance for freedom. Really? Was that the reason the President gave for the attack? NO.
This is right up with the attack on the Venezuela. I happen to agree that these are the acts of a man desperate to deflect attention from other illegal actions he has been involved with. The man is NOT pro-life. And from what I've been hearing, members of his own political party are beginning to wake up.
The pastor of the Cathedral in San Diego gave a very good homily this morning. I think that is a first for me to say since I arrived here. "Bear your share of hardships for the sake of the gospel." That is from the second reading from St. Paul to Timothy. Every time we see injustice in the world as we have seen so often in the last two years, our hearts should be screaming for an end to it. While some "leaders" may have been killed in the Saturday attack, hundreds of civilians and military personnel were "collateral damage" as some people would say. Not one of us knows who was killed. Could any one of those people been the one who had the formula for curing cancer once and for all?
God, help us, we implore you.
Thank you for the excellent summary of the recent events. And, the thought provoking question about the unknown people who are now gone, and what they may have contributed in their lives, had they lived.
